Those who have come to embrace CBD—short for cannabidiol, a chemical abundant in the cannabis plant that, unlike its sibling tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, does not make you high—tout its calming effects in everything from memory-foam pillows to nail polish. Its popularity has far outpaced researchers, who are still working to understand the ingredient’s effects. (To date, the F.D.A. has only approved one CBD-derived drug, called Epidiolex, to treat rare seizure disorders; the majority of scientific studies on the chemical have been conducted on animals.) The CBD industry is expected to hit $16 billion by 2025, fueled by users who report relief from afflictions including anxiety, depression, and stress. So it seems only natural, if not exceptionally clever, to incorporate the chemical into salts that dissolve into the bath—a millenias-old method of chilling out.

CBD bath salts purport to provide full-body tranquility, unlike creams, balms, and oils that only offer benefits to the areas where they’re applied. Interested in dipping a toe into cannabidiol-infused water? Consider using the High CBD Formula Bath Salts from Lord Jones, a Los Angeles–based purveyor of hemp-derived CBD gumdrops and skin care. The blend features dried arnica and calendula flower petals, citrus and eucalyptus essential oils, and rocks of Epsom and Himalayan salts that are infused with CBD. To treat physical body aches, reach for Vertly’s Muscle Soak Bath Salts, handmade in small batches in Northern California, that mix hemp extract with magnesium, sulfur, and Dead Sea Salts, which exfoliates skin while calming inflammation.

In lieu of large (and potentially messy) salt kernels, you can also try bath bombs, which compress ingredients into a single, solid form. The CBD–skin care brand Prima flattens whole-plant hemp extract and eucalyptus, lavender, camphor, and meadowfoam-seed oil into what looks like a giant sugar cube to form its Bath Gem Bath Soak. Meanwhile, Pocono Organics, one of the largest regenerative farms in North America, makes its Nano-Particle Bath Bomb with tiny CBD pieces that diffuse in water. If you’re not into fizzy theatrics, we suggest the CBD Bath Bombs from Hollingsworth Hemp, a family-owned business in Seattle that cultivates its own cannabinoids. Sold in packs of two, each handmade sphere contains coconut oil and aloe vera that breaks down discreetly, and promises to leave the mind relaxed and the skin silky smooth.
