Anyone who has ever been hangry during pregnancy or postpartum knows that not all foods are created equal. “While pregnant with my son, I struggled to find a tasty snack that packed a nutritional punch,” says Ugandan-born, Vancouver, B.C.–based mom Lilian Umurungi-Jung, who knows firsthand what it’s like to sleeplessly decide between healthy and satisfying fare. The dilemma led her to found Mumgry, a plant-based condiment company created specifically with mothers—or mums—in mind.

Mumgry specializes in nut butters, which are powerhouses during pregnancy with their high protein, vitamin, and fiber content. The portable, nutrient-rich spreads are also an ideal treat for kids, or for anyone looking for a wholesome bite. While supermarket shelves often teem with nut butters that have added oils or other stabilizers to keep their ingredients from separating, Mumgry’s iterations are hand-packed into jars to slow the division, which occurs in all natural nut butters, and to maintain a creamy texture.

Each flavor is pared down to the essentials: nuts and chocolate. Expectant mothers (or any nut-butter fan) might try the Pistachio-Chocolate Almond Butter to benefit from the pale green seed, which is full of antioxidants and can help maintain healthy blood-sugar levels; or the Chocolate Peanut Butter, made with dark chocolate, which can help reduce the risk of heart disease. The Smooth Peanut Butter contains multiple health-giving components, including protein, calcium, and folic acid, which, for pregnant women, can help prevent certain birth defects of a developing baby’s brain.

For the holiday season, the brand is reintroducing its Mumgry Mini Trio—a package including all its flavors—in a box that can be repurposed as a planter. A small (and delicious) gift for moms and moms-to-be, it’s one way to give back to someone who never ceases to give.
